Fen collects no data about you. It has no accounts, no analytics, no ads and no tracking. We run no server that receives anything from the app.
Fen reads and writes only the documents you open and the folders you add as workspaces. Its own data (search index, settings, activity log) stays on your device in the .fen folder of your home directory, or in the app container for the Mac App Store build. If a file sits in iCloud Drive, Apple syncs it under your Apple Account. Fen does not see that traffic.
Fen connects to the network only for these features. Each one is off until you use it.
| Feature | Where it connects | What it sends |
|---|---|---|
| AI providers you add yourself | The address you enter. An Ollama server on your own Mac never leaves it. | The question and the passages you choose to include, plus the API key you saved. |
| GitHub sync | api.github.com and the repository you cloned | Your repository's content and the token you saved. |
| Check for Updates (direct download only) | github.com/zoharbabin/fen/releases | A request for the newest release. |
| Interactive maps (setting is off by default) | OpenStreetMap tile servers | The map tiles your view needs, so the server sees your IP address and the area you view. |
| MCP server (setting is off by default) | Listens on 127.0.0.1 only | Nothing leaves your Mac. |
API keys and tokens are stored in the system Keychain, not in your documents.
The iOS share extension saves the text you share into a folder shared with the Fen app on your device. It makes no network connection.
Fen collects nothing from anyone, including children.
Fen is open source. This page changes only with the code, and the history is in the repository. Ask questions or report a privacy concern in the issue tracker.
